Biddestone retain the Bath Youth League Cup
Biddestone Under 15s completed a brilliant double on Monday as they
won the Bath Youth League Cup for the second year running to go along with the County Cup
they won early in the year. It was a brilliant team performance which concluded in a 43
run win, leaving captain Andrew Lawton and coach Andy Short very pleased. "It was a
impressive team performance, with contributions from everyone. We knew we could do it if
we performed at our best" commented Andrew.
Andrew got Biddestone off to a good start by winning the toss and electing to bat on a
green, damp track. Tim Knight took the game by the scruff of the neck with a hard hitting
24 of just 23 balls to remove any nerves in the Biddestone dressing room. Martin Sawyer
(27) and Andrew Lawton (29) also contributed with the bat, but in-form bat, Michael Flynn
was unlucky to be LBW, trying to pick up the pace. A middle order collapse that followed
meant that from 89-1, Biddestone were 95-6 before James Howells bludgeoned 14 off the last
over to give Biddestone the advantage as the 1st innings came to an end on 115 for 7.
Josh Boulton (0-15) kept the pressure on the Lansdown with a spell of very tight seam
bowling and, with his opening partner James Howells taking 2-15 thanks to a great catch
from Matt Hayes at mid wicket Lansdown were left at 11-2 at one stage. Then it was the
turn of the spinners. Andrew Lawton (3-20) and Nat Jansen bowled very economically in
their 4 overs, Nat deserving his excellent figures of 4 overs. 1 maiden 3 wickets for 7
runs. Two sharp stumpings, one off each bowler, really helped as Jamie Harlowe stepped up
with a good performance behind the stumps. Jamie Penton and Paul Walden finished of an
impressive bowling display with full and straight bowling which allowed Paul to bag two
more wickets and finish the game in the final over. Lansdown finished 72 all out, when a
diving catch from Martin Sawyer secured victory for Biddestone.
After the game there was even time for a quick thank you presentation for Andy Short from
the skipper before the team finished their celebrations. Andrew complimented his coach's
commitment throughout the year, "I can't think of a training session he has missed,
we've set ourselves very high standards and he's helped us to achieve them, so much credit
for our achievements must go to him". Andrew also thanked the Biddestone crowd,
"The amount of fans we had today, was excellent, it has been great support for all
the lads on the pitch, they have followed us to every game this year which has been really
great."
