The 2003 Season has been probably the most successful in the clubs long
history.
The
First X1 won Division 1 of The Wiltshire Cricket League. In so doing Biddestone has now
been promoted to The West of England Premier League Structure. We will be playing next
year in Division 2 of The Glos/Wilts Combination. The Second X1 will automatically follow
the first team into this league structure, and compete in the second X1 division of the
same Glos/Wilts Combination.
Incredibly,
this puts Biddestone into the top 60 cricket clubs in the West of England. Not bad for a
village called Biddestone !
We are so
fortunate that this coincides with the opening of the new village hall and sports changing
room complex at the sports ground.
Biddestone 1st
X1 went into the last game of the season against Collingbourne in second place, with the
opponents in third place. The league leaders, Westinghouse were away at Nationwide, who
were struggling against relegation. Soon after tea, the news got back from Swindon that Nationwide had bowled Westinghouse out
cheaply, and therefore, the winners of the game at Biddestone, would probably end up as
champions. We beat Collingbourne by 70 runs and the rest is history. The evenings
celebrations were also something to remember.
Players who had
a personal season to remember were, Dwaine Perry, who scored 950 league runs and Gordon
Bedwell, who took 47 league wickets. Both were league bests and therefore wins each of
them the divisional individual award for batting and bowling. Dwaine actually had an
average of 95, he also represented Wiltshire Under 21s at full county level, scoring
124 in the match against Berkshire.
Biddestone 3rd
X1 finished in the top half of their league, and with mainly youth team players, this was
a tremendous effort. Captain Kev Mitchell should be congratulated.
At youth team
level, our under 15s finished mid table in both The Bath & District and The
North Wilts Leagues. They also reached the semi final of the cup before being beaten by
Keynsham.
The under
13s won both the Bath &
District East Division, and went on to win the overall championship by beating the Western
champions Purnells CC. The Under 13s also reached the final of the Wiltshire Under
13 County Cup, losing a close game against South Wilts at Corsham CC.
Our under
11s with a very young team did well in both the Bath and Wiltshire Leagues.
For those of you
that do not know, our youth teams each play approximately 22 games during the season.
The club is
planning to expand the development of youth section in the 2004 season, with the
introduction of a Kwik Cricket group. This will provide an introduction to cricket for
players between the ages of 6 and 9 by way of fast, exciting and fun games of Kwik
Cricket.
During the
season the players from Biddestone were selected for the following county teams;-
Under 12
Andrew Lawton Full Wiltshire County Cap.
Under 13 Tom Needham Full Wiltshire County Cap.
Under 17 - Doug Miller Full Wiltshire
County Cap.
Under 21 Dwaine Perry Full Wiltshire County Cap.

Wiltshire District Representative selections were;-
